Safe & Sound

March 17, 2017

The distinct sound of sirens at night, wake us from our slumber. If you live in a neighborhood with blue lights or if you live in a neighborhood with no lights, the sounds of the city are the same. The project began when lead artist, April Danielle Lewis considered “...the local soundscapes in relationship to the monumental light towers that illuminate strategic sites throughout the Greater Mondawmin neighborhood.”

Safe & Sound is a two part installation and participatory performance that explores what makes the Greater Mondawmin community feel safe.

Part One: Exploration of Safety Workshops and Safety in Numbers Parade

is a series of free public hands-on workshops that invite Greater Mondawmin community members to engage in conversations about the light towers around their neighborhood while considering what makes them feel safe. Participants will use their findings to design and create umbrellas with light augmentations to be carried in a celebratory parade!

FREE PUBLIC WORKSHOPS:

Saturday March 4th, 2017 10:30AM-1:30PM @FlashPoint (at Mondawmin Mall)

Saturday March 11th, 2017  10:30AM-1:30PM @FlashPoint  (at Mondawmin Mall)

Saturday March 18th, 2017 10:30AM-1:30PM @FlashPoint  (at Mondawmin Mall)

Additional workshops specifically designed for students will take place in partnership with the following neighborhood schools: ConneXions Academy, Liberty Elementary, and Creative City Public Charter School.

The celebratory Safety in Numbers Parade will gather all of the workshop participants and their light based sculptures to kick-off the procession on April 7th, 2017 | 8:00PM at the ConneXions Academy parking lot and will end at the southwest corner of Hanlon Park for a night of performances!

Part Two: FREE Night of Performances

April 7th, 2017 | 9-11PM (at Hanlon Park)

The parade will lead participants to Beacon, an original light based public sculpture at Hanlon Park where a performance program co-curated by April Danielle Lewis and Sunsets will commence. The performances will explore themes of safety and protection and will feature an exciting selection of local performance art, music, and spoken word artists!

Things are blooming in the backyard these days. I’ve been loving the storms this summer. All the plants get watered while I get to do other things. #shastadaisy #echinacea #coneflower #astilbe #sedum #daylily #englishivy #polinator

I spent much of me weekend in the woods avoiding all that is wrong with the world. Today it felt good to get out and yell at the top of my lungs. I am also very grateful for my community. #blacklivesmatter #restinpowergeorgefloyd #nojusticenopeace #m
My @baltimorevotes_ #partyatthemailbox box came today. Good thing because I’d been meaning to fill out my ballot and send it in. This was a great reminder and hopefully all my door posters will remind others.
